Fine Print

  • If you submit by post and you would like your work returned, please include a suitable stamped addressed envelope. Also, please note that we can’t be responsible for lost post – so always keep a back-up copy at home.
  • It isn’t essential, but we like it if you ring or email us first to discuss how we could best work for you, who your preferred tutor might be and for us to inform you of exactly when you will receive our report.
  • Please feel free to include a note – by post or with your email – if there is anything you would particularly like us to examine or advise you about. This might be about specific problems you’re having with your work so far, or about how you look on your work – is it literary, or are you are specifically going for a genre like crime or romantic comedy or sci-fi? It would also be good to know if you have had any feedback from agents or publishers so far.
  • None of this is essential, but it might help us to focus on the things that matter for you, and also for you to focus on exactly why you have approached us. We’re here to help as much as possible.

  • If submitting by post, please try to print texts in 12 point font, double-spaced, and on one side only of A4. Please also remember to number each page and do make sure that your name, phone number, and email address are included on the title page of your MS. There's no need for binders, files, boxes, paperclips, or anything else.
  • If you submit by email, we will reply by email. If you submit by post, we will post you our reports.
  • For the fee, we undertake to provide a written, independent critique. While we always endeavour to be as helpful as we can to new writers, the fee covers the read and report only as described.
  • Your work will always be treated in the strictest confidence and the copyright of your work is yours and remains yours at all times.
  • The copyright of the report remains with The Writer’s Practice - but we’re usually more than happy for you to quote the report to agents and publishers and on personal websites, as long as you clear it with us first.
  • We will only make recommendations to agents or publishers if we feel your work is potentially publishable, and obviously with your full agreement first. However we will never be able to guarantee the response.
